Whether you’ve been contemplating becoming a student or have already registered for your first class at our academy, you might be wandering “What should I expect as a student of Brooks Defense?”

I’m going to take some time to explain what you can expect when you attend any of our courses as a student – whether it’s your first class or hundredth.

Below is a list that will lay out what to basically expect when you attend any of our courses.

• No Political Correctness: While we conduct ourselves professionally, at the same time, we’re not going to coddle students. In reality, even the world isn’t going to coddle you. I’ve done business with individuals in the past that can be described as thin skinned. For me to walk on egg shells all day, I find myself miserable and not my authentic self. I tend to be blunt and straight-forward when I present information in my classes because I’d rather have my students feel a sting for a short time than to experience a lifetime of pure misery.
• No Politics or Religion: When it comes to our classes, we don’t discuss politics, religion or sports as those topics tend to open the room up for debate and take the lesson off-track. If students wish to have those discussions with each other during a lunch break, that’s one thing but never during the sessions. At most, when it comes to politics for example, we emphasize that all political parties (along with the media) are equal to blame as well as stress the importance of getting involved locally and statewide when it comes to exercising and defending your Second Amendment right as the 2A applies to everyone regardless of race, sexual orientation, religious and political beliefs, sex/gender, ability, etc. While some instructors do push politics in their classes, I don’t see it being productive and have heard complaints from individuals that have taken courses where politics and/or campaigns are “pushed”. Personally, I simply don’t care where an individual leans with their political or religious beliefs. What I do care about is the reason as to why someone is taking my course(s) (ex: self-defense, better understanding of the laws, job requirement, etc), if they can legally possess firearms (if it’s that type of training), and whether they have a willingness to learn the subject. My goal is to make sure that my students have the tools to be legally, morally, financially, and physically safe. As Michael Jordan once said, “Republicans buy sneakers, too.”
• Small Class Sizes: While I have taught and have no issue teaching larger class sizes, I have found that smaller class sizes (>8 students) tend to be the most productive. I also offer private sessions for those that may need more personalized attention.
• Relaxed Atmosphere: We want our students to enjoy themselves and to make learning fun. We make jokes and so on. At the same time, we have standards that need to be met to pass our courses as well as safety. These things we don’t compromise on as we’re not like a factory (i.e. certificate mill). It’s quality over quantity!
